Last week we visited the cottage where Thomas Hardy was born. Higher Bockhampton is near Dorchester, Dorset (Casterbridge in his books). Hardy wrote novels which were based in the surrounding areas. The land nearby became Egdon Heath in his works. The cottage now belongs to the National Trust. It’s a picturesque cottage, but amenities were basic in those days. The garden is filled with typical English cottage-garden flowers, attracting bees and butterflies alike.

  1. I’m not surprised that he became a writer having been born in a place like it. What a beautiful cottage. It is so inspirational.
Thank you for sharing these photos and for the information about Thomas Hardy. I have to admit that I didn’t know about him.
